Walleye
Walleye still seem to be locked into their summer patterns given how warm it has been. Reports have been indicating that water surface temps have been ranging between 68 and 73 degrees depending what time of day it is. That said, during the very early morning hours or later evening hours, you can probably still work weed edges and drop offs with crawlers and minnows. However, during the day, fishing deep with either bottom bouncers or trolling cranks has seemed to be the most effective. A quick note, however, on water conditions…it looks like this Tuesday we will be getting a slight cooldown. Not a big one, but a cooldown nonetheless. That could potentially spark the Walleyes to start getting into more of a fall pattern by maybe late next week.
Musky
Musky action, despite the heat, has been ok. Early morning and later evening bites have been very productive using Bucktails. Orange lately has been a really good color. During the day, the bite has been pretty decent in deeper weeds using Medussas. Trolling mid day has been producing some results as well. The last week has seen several nice fish caught on large Grandma baits and Mattlocks. Suckers, despite the warmer surface temps, have been putting some fish in the boat as well. As stated above in the Walleye section, a slight cooldown is on the horizon. The sucker bite could possibly pick up fairly quickly over the next week or two if the cooldown continues.
Northern
Pike continue to be active but they are small. Shimano World Rush Cranks, Tinseltails, and Chatterbaits have all been producing fish in the shallow to mid depth weeds.
Crappie
Crappie are still on the cribs and brushpiles in a bit deeper water. A lot of folks reporting good action in the cribs that are right at the entrance to Tyner Lake in Chief Lake. Crappie Minnows are the go-to for live bait. The choices for artificials have been Gulp! Minnows, Bobby Garland Mayflies, and Voodoo Flashbang Jigs.
Bass
Largemouth have been a bit quiet, but Smallmouth are still hitting in the rocks and stumps on Wacky Worms and Ned Rigs. A lot of smallmouth action reported around Cranberry Lake and the Knucklebuster on the Southeast side.
