On January 27, 2004 the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board unanimously approved the acquisition of the privately owned parcel on Big Timber Island. On February 4, 2004 Governor Jim Doyle signed the purchase agreement. Documents and deeds have been signed and recorded. It's a Done Deal!
Your gifts, totaling over $50,000 made this possible. One can give without loving but no one can love without giving. The hundreds of people who gave what they could have proven they truly love this wonderful semi-wilderness resource. You have proven to everyone the Chippewa Islands Project is for real. Thanks to the vision and stewardship of people in prior decades, 90% of the shoreline and nearly all of the islands on the Flowage are undeveloped and will stay that way.
There are, however, two significant, undeveloped, island properties that are privately owned, one on Big Timber Island, the other on the "Moonshine" island. Developers have targeted both in the last year. A coalition of property owners, the WDNR, the Lac Courte Oreilles Band and other concerned citizens have been able to thwart these efforts to date, but the margins of victory have been too close. At a Sawyer County Zoning Committee hearing on l2-20-02 a committee member suggested that if we did not want development on these islands, then "buy them." That is exactly what the Chippewa Islands Project is going to bring about.
Our immediate focus is the parcel on Big Timber Island. Under l0 acres of land, but with over 2000 feet of shoreline, the parcel is listed for sale. The WDNR is going to be the lead agency in this acquisition. A covenant will assure daytime public use and ban development forever.
The current owner is willing to sell to the WDNR and communications are taking place between his agent and the Department. This acquisition is consistent and in perfect harmony with the Chippewa Flowage Joint Agency Management Plan. Ultimately the purchase will require the approval of the Natural Resources Board, the Legislature, and the Governor.

The Chippewa Islands Project is a co-operative effort to facilitate and expedite this transaction. The groundwork has been done quietly over the past six months. A growing list of organizations and interested parties are providing letters of support. The political logistics from here to Madison are being worked out. To underscore the deep and broad based support for this purchase the CFAPOA and the CWRLT have launched a fund raising effort. We are now actively seeking and asking for contributions to help make this happen. CWRLT is a 501(C) (3) non-profit organization. Contributions are tax-deductible dependant only on one’s individual tax filing status.
If everyone who has enjoyed the Chippewa Flowage once in the past year gave just $20, we could secure Big Timber and have a nice down payment for "Moonshine" without any State involvement. Hopefully those who enjoy the Flowage more often (and can) will contribute more.
No contribution is too large no contribution is too small.

The appraisals of the parcel on Big Timber Island have been completed and submitted to the WDNR. The numbers look very favorable. The department's review appraiser inspected the property with Neal Kephart on Oct. 29th. We expect on offer to be tendered before the end of the month. As of October 30 we have received over $43,000 in contributions with several pledges still outstanding. Thanks to your generosity we can live up to our commitment of $50,0000 towards this acquisition.
